A year in highlights

The summary below presents some of Triodos Bank’s most significant environmental achievements and efforts in 2013.

Policy

The principles of the procurement and outsourcing policy were defined in a draft policy in 2013. Specifically, sustainable procurement guidelines and a draft outsourcing and vendor management policy were drawn up. Both documents will be finalised at the beginning of 2014.

Energy consumption

Triodos Bank aims to meet all its offices’ energy needs from renewable sources. The contract with the energy supplier in The Netherlands was renewed in 2013. All the energy purchased by the Dutch offices is 100% renewable and entirely generated by wind farms. Solar panels were also installed on its premises during the year. All the offices in Spain use 100% renewable energy. If Triodos Bank takes over new offices that do not yet use a renewable energy supplier, the organisation switches to one as soon as possible. Triodos Bank Belgium will be able to purchase 100% renewable electricity in three steps in the first half of 2014.

In 2013, the bank introduced further measures to reduce energy consumption. For instance a policy was pursued to minimise energy consumption by computers via ‘thin clients’. This new technology can save 90% in energy consumption compared to conventional computers. In the UK office, 60% of the workstations already use thin clients; in Belgium the figure is 65%. Where possible, thin clients are also introduced when conventional computers are replaced in other offices.

Gas and electricity consumption

In 2013, gas consumption increased by 2% per FTE and increased per office cubic metre (m3) by 5%, compared to 2012. Electricity consumption decreased by 9% per FTE and decreased per office square meter (m2) by 8%.

Travel

Business travel

Co-workers use public transport for travel whenever possible. When travel by car is essential Triodos Bank leases company cars with an high environmental performance.

The average CO2 emissions for Triodos Bank’s commercial fleet decreased from 115g in 2012 to 107g in 2013.

In 2013, air travel increased by 8% per FTE (compared to a decrease of 4% in 2012).

A pilot project using video conferencing, connecting all the offices, was launched in September 2013 to help reduce co-worker air travel. The system was also used for video conference meetings with other companies. A policy was formulated that will be implemented across the organisation in 2014, on the basis of this successful pilot. Triodos Bank Spain has used a national video-conferencing system since 2013, between head office and the local branches. The system is used, among other things, for the Monday-morning meetings and for training.

In December 2013 Triodos Bank’s UK branch won two awards for its transport policy – the Travelwest/West of England Sustainable Travel Awards (receiving the award for ‘most dramatic modal shift’), and Travelwest/West of England Sustainable Business Travel (winning a bronze medal). Good facilities for co-workers who cycle to work, and an absence of parking spaces, have resulted in more co-workers cycling or using public transport to travel to work.

Commuting

Co-workers are encouraged to commute in as environmentally friendly a way as possible. The total commuting distance travelled per FTE increased by 1% in 2013. Triodos Bank co-workers travelled 37% of the total commuting distance by public transport, compared to 42% in 2012. Car use for commuting increased by 13% per FTE.

Paper usage

Triodos Bank aims to reduce the environmental footprint of its paper usage and printing. Where possible, it uses recycled paper and environmentally sound printing processes and materials, such as water-efficient printing and vegetable-based inks. The use of office paper increased by 1% per FTE in 2013, and the use of printed paper – such as promotional material for clients – decreased by 29% per FTE and 32% per client. The German branch achieved more then 30% reduction in the use of printed paper.

Office space in square metres

Triodos Bank continues to develop as an organisation. It opened five new local offices in Spain and an extra office space for the branch’s central services. Sustainable materials were used whenever possible in the refurbishment of Spanish offices. The total office space of Triodos Bank increased by 9%.

Waste

Triodos Bank monitors the waste collection process very carefully, and separately collects glass, paper, plastics and organic waste. It also proactively encourages recycling. In 2012 Triodos Bank moved into new premises in the UK. The lease contract for its old premises expired on 1 September 2013; 80% of the furniture and fixtures from this office were donated to other organisations for re-use. The remaining 20% were fully recycled without any materials going to landfill. In addition, any remaining computers were donated to schools in Africa.

Social indicators

Triodos Bank Spain won an award in 2013 (from COCEMFE Valencia) for its financial support to organisations that focus on offering career opportunities to people with disabilities.
